F.A.Q.’s (Frequently Asked Questions)

Where do I get started with Jeff Johnson’s Underground Training Lab?

Jeff suggests that you start here:

https://www.undergroundtraininglab.com/49/getting-started/

The PDF files won’t open, what’s wrong?

The PDF files are using the latest reader technologies from Adobe. You must have the latest version of Adobe reader to access the PDF files.

Please download and install the latest free Adobe reader:

http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html

Where do I download the blog software package?

To download the blog software package you need to subscribe to our mailing list here: https://www.undergroundtraininglab.com/main.php by entering your name and email.

Next, you have to check your email with the subject line:

“RESPONSE REQUIRED: Confirm your request for information from undergroundlab@aweber.com”

Click on the link in that email to confirm your email address.

After you confirm your email address, you will receive a second email with the subject line:

“your new seo blog installation package from Jeff Johnson”

At the bottom of the email will be instructions on how to download the blog software starting with: “So here’s what you do“.

If you did not get any of the emails, check your spam filters. If you still did not get the messages after checking your spam filters contact our help desk and we will assist you further:

http://www.jeffjohnsonshelpdesk.com/

The username and password you sent me in my email to download the blog software doesn’t work. I’m getting Error 401 – Unauthorized.

Try to manually type in the username and password. Even though using copy & paste is fast, sometimes it can select unnecessary spaces before or after the username or password. Even though you cannot see the spaces it will result in an incorrect username and/or password.

The simple resolution to this problem is to manually type in the username and password and you’ll be granted access to the download page.

What is FTP and why do I need this?

FTP (File Transfer Protocol) is a method to upload files to a web host server. To understand how to use an FTP client you first would need to setup a domain and webhost to obtain your FTP information. You would then use your FTP information in an FTP client such as Filezilla to upload the blog package to your webhost. If you are unfamiliar with how to setup a domain and webhost, I suggest you read more about domains at GoDaddy.com and look into webhosts at companies such as 1and1.com and HostGator.com.

Our blog software does require some basic knowledge about domains, webhosts, and FTP in order to install. I would suggest you first become familiar with domains and webhosts, in which understanding what it means to FTP will follow.

I need help setting up my FTP information with Filezilla, what do I do?

If you are having difficulty with Filezilla, I suggest that you check out to the documentation by Filezilla here: http://wiki.filezilla-project.org/Main_Page

I followed the installation instructions to where it says to upload the files, but where do I upload the files?

Depending upon your web hosting company and FTP information, this directory could be numerous locations. Common directories to upload are httpdocs, public_html and the first directory you are presented with when you connect with your FTP information.

If you see a httpdocs or public_html directory, then most likely you would want to upload the files into there. If you do not see a httpdocs or public_html directory, then you would upload the files in the current directory you are connected with.

All of these common directories will upload the files to the root of your domain (I.E. – www.YOURDOMAIN.com). If you create a new folder in the root directory, say “wordpress”, then the domain of your blog would be www.YOURDOMAIN.com/wordpress.

I tried to install the blog software and go an error similar to this:

Warning: main(../wp-config.php) [function.main]: failed to open
stream: No such file or directory
in /home/domain/public_html /admin.php on line 7
Fatal error: main() [function.require]: Failed opening required ‘../wp-
config.php’
(include_path=’.:/usr/php4/lib/php:/usr/local/php4/lib/php’)
in /home/domain/public_html /admin.php on line 7

What does this mean and what do I do?

If you got an error similar to the one above, this means, while uploading the blog software with your FTP client, some files were not uploaded completely. Occasionally FTP clients can get disconnected when a large number of files are being uploaded.

To fix this problem, just re-upload the missing files. In the example above the missing file is the wp-config.php. You can tell because it will follow the Warning message, enclosed in parenthesis.

What if I already have wordpress installed? Can I upgrade my current blog to use the free SEO package?

The answer is yes, but is not recommended. Here is a tutorial on how to upgrade your blog: https://www.undergroundtraininglab.com/42/upgrade-wordpress/

This is for experience users only!

I tried to install my blog and I got this message, “Error establishing a database connection”, what do I do?

This error message means that the database information that you save into the wp-config.php file is incorrect. First, check to make sure that you typed in everything correctly then try again. If the error message persists, if maybe a problem with user permissions. Make sure that you granted access to the user your created for the database to the database.

If you’re confused on this, please re-read over the steps carefully under Step 1 here: https://www.undergroundtraininglab.com/2/seo-wordpress-installation/

If you’re still having troubles, contact your web host.

I tried to click on the button on the XML Sitemap page that says “Apply Jeff Johnson’s Configurations” and I do not see it. What is wrong?

This feature is available to the most recent version of our package, version 1.2a.

Version ‘a’ does not have this upgrade feature. Only versions 0.9b and 1.2a have this feature. If you are upgrading your blog make sure you have the most up-to-date package. Upload the entire contents of that package to the location of your current blog, overwriting all files. (Except for the wp-config.php file, of course)

You can distinguish the difference by looking at the name of the zip folder (notice the number letter version at the end of the name of the file):

Most up-to-date package file name:

undergroundtraininglab-seo-wordpress-1.2a.zip

I tried clicking on a link to a post on my newly installed blog and I’m getting a 404 error, page cannot be displayed. What is going on?

The error you are getting is due to a permalink structure error. This is a rather simple fix. In the instructions (https://www.undergroundtraininglab.com/2/seo-wordpress-installation/) Step 5 parts g., h., and i. explain what is needed to fix this problem. Read these steps carefully and it should correct your problem.

SimpleCaptcha plugin Issues

1.) Try to deactivate and reactivate the SimpleCaptcha plugin from Plugins>Installed from the admin side. If that still doesnt work, you may have to manually install the plugin. Connect to your blog via FTP, then go to wp-content/plugins and delete the current simple-captcha folder. Download the newest version of that plugin here: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/simple-captcha/ Extract the folder simplecaptcha and upload it the wp-content/plugins directory. If this is confusing, you can refer to WordPress’s installation of plugins here: http://codex.wordpress.org/Managing_Plugins After you’ve manually installed the simpleCaptcha plugin, it should now show within the Traffic Getting SEO Plugin as Installed & Activated.

2.) Make sure the .htaccess file is left writable otherwise this message will hang there because it knows it can not make changes to the permalink structure.

3.) Hopefully with the updates above you’ll be able to increase the utilization of the plugin.

In trying to install your Free Traffic Getting Seo software via my blog, following your installation instructions, I get an error message that states:

The uploaded file could not be moved to
    /home/dashingl/public_html/internetmarketingblog/wp-content/uploads/2009/11

Is there another way to upload the file, and if so, where would I uploaded to?

    thanks for any help

Jeff Johnson: Some hosts require “unique” folders, or it could be your permissions settings… please ask your hosting company for help

A quick question. I have a network of 100+ blogs and domains that I wanted to use with your software. Is there a quicker way to set up the blogs and install all the plugins. I have about 50+ domains that I have simply installed latest WP, and was wondering if I can speed up the process.

Thanks for your answer in advance.

Jeff Johnson: wordpress has an api that may be useful, but we haven’t tested it for this purpose.

Here’s the issue: TGSP asks a series of questions that have to be filled out during installation so it can properly configure your blog based on your answers.

So even if you do install it remotely, someone really needs to go into each blog and enter the relevant keywords and such, which means you could aslo install the pluigin while you are there. Yes, you could pre-populate the fields with standard genreric answers and create a universal installation routine, but it would greatly reduce the effectiveness of the “SEO” part of the plugins.

I have tried to to update and condif my web site without any success. I cannot back up my files without thinking I will destroy the entire blog. I cannot add the 2.0.3 upgrade. My site is all red because it is not config. I know I sound dumb. I’m sorry. I tried making the blog work by adding the plugin and it is still showing red
    Please help.

Jeff Johnson all the tutorials you should need are here: https://www.undergroundtraininglab.com/tgsp-install/

As for the back up… it should not destroy anything, but rather preserve if something goes wrong. Please ask your host for help if you aren’t comfortable doing it yourself.

    Hi Jeff,

I’ve reinstalles the file, but the problem persits. What can I do?

You plugin seems to have died when we upgraded, here’s what support said:

“there is a bug in the seo-blog plugin as concerns php 5.3.2 … its trying to use some feature in PHP that doesn’t exist in php 5.3.2 … a lot of PHP programmers out there write their code so that it surpresses all error messages, which is great except in a case like this, where it gives absolutely no indication as to where the problem is …

You need to contact the author of the seo-blog plug in and find out if there is a newer version tested against PHP 5.3.2”

    Help???
    (email please)

First report we’ve seen on this, and there’s no guarantee it’s TGSP, but we’ll look into it.

Here is what I get when I try to install
Incompatible Archive. PCLZIP_ERR_BAD_FORMAT (-10) : Unable to find End of Central Dir Record signature
    What am I doing wrong?

    • Jeff Johnson 20. Jul, 2010 at 4:08 pm #

could be a zip issue, a php memory issue, php.ini, etc.

I’d start by asking your host to look at it for you.

If that doesn’t work please refer to the installation tutorials for reinstalling it, etc.

    Jeff,

I tried to install the SEO program on my latest blog and got this error “Warning: php_uname() has been disabled for security reasons in /var/www/vhosts/saveyourmarriage.ws/httpdocs/wp-content/plugins/seo-blog/core.php on line 2. I started with version 2.0 then moved up to beta 2.1.1. I got the same error with both. I’ve installed this software on about 4 r 5 other blogs with no problem other than the ioncube issue. Any ideas?

    Mark

    • Jeff Johnson 03. Aug, 2010 at 12:30 pm #

You’d have to ask your host why it was locked out for security reasons… since they are the ones locking it out.
