F.A.Q.’s (Frequently Asked Questions)

Where do I get started with Jeff Johnson’s Underground Training Lab?

Jeff suggests that you start here:

The PDF files won’t open, what’s wrong?

The PDF files are using the latest reader technologies from Adobe. You must have the latest version of Adobe reader to access the PDF files.

Please download and install the latest free Adobe reader:

Where do I download the blog software package?

To download the blog software package you need to subscribe to our mailing list here: https://www.undergroundtraininglab.com/main.php by entering your name and email.

Next, you have to check your email with the subject line:

“RESPONSE REQUIRED: Confirm your request for information from undergroundlab@aweber.com”

Click on the link in that email to confirm your email address.

After you confirm your email address, you will receive a second email with the subject line:

“your new seo blog installation package from Jeff Johnson”

At the bottom of the email will be instructions on how to download the blog software starting with: “So here’s what you do“.

If you did not get any of the emails, check your spam filters. If you still did not get the messages after checking your spam filters contact our help desk and we will assist you further:

The username and password you sent me in my email to download the blog software doesn’t work. I’m getting Error 401 – Unauthorized.

Try to manually type in the username and password. Even though using copy & paste is fast, sometimes it can select unnecessary spaces before or after the username or password. Even though you cannot see the spaces it will result in an incorrect username and/or password.

The simple resolution to this problem is to manually type in the username and password and you’ll be granted access to the download page.

What is FTP and why do I need this?

FTP (File Transfer Protocol) is a method to upload files to a web host server. To understand how to use an FTP client you first would need to setup a domain and webhost to obtain your FTP information. You would then use your FTP information in an FTP client such as Filezilla to upload the blog package to your webhost. If you are unfamiliar with how to setup a domain and webhost, I suggest you read more about domains at GoDaddy.com and look into webhosts at companies such as 1and1.com and HostGator.com.

Our blog software does require some basic knowledge about domains, webhosts, and FTP in order to install. I would suggest you first become familiar with domains and webhosts, in which understanding what it means to FTP will follow.

I need help setting up my FTP information with Filezilla, what do I do?

If you are having difficulty with Filezilla, I suggest that you check out to the documentation by Filezilla here: http://wiki.filezilla-project.org/Main_Page

I followed the installation instructions to where it says to upload the files, but where do I upload the files?

Depending upon your web hosting company and FTP information, this directory could be numerous locations. Common directories to upload are httpdocs, public_html and the first directory you are presented with when you connect with your FTP information.

If you see a httpdocs or public_html directory, then most likely you would want to upload the files into there. If you do not see a httpdocs or public_html directory, then you would upload the files in the current directory you are connected with.

All of these common directories will upload the files to the root of your domain (I.E. – www.YOURDOMAIN.com). If you create a new folder in the root directory, say “wordpress”, then the domain of your blog would be www.YOURDOMAIN.com/wordpress.

I tried to install the blog software and go an error similar to this:

Warning: main(../wp-config.php) [function.main]: failed to open
stream: No such file or directory
in /home/domain/public_html /admin.php on line 7
Fatal error: main() [function.require]: Failed opening required ‘../wp-
in /home/domain/public_html /admin.php on line 7

What does this mean and what do I do?

If you got an error similar to the one above, this means, while uploading the blog software with your FTP client, some files were not uploaded completely. Occasionally FTP clients can get disconnected when a large number of files are being uploaded.

To fix this problem, just re-upload the missing files. In the example above the missing file is the wp-config.php. You can tell because it will follow the Warning message, enclosed in parenthesis.

What if I already have wordpress installed? Can I upgrade my current blog to use the free SEO package?

The answer is yes, but is not recommended. Here is a tutorial on how to upgrade your blog: https://www.undergroundtraininglab.com/42/upgrade-wordpress/

This is for experience users only!

I tried to install my blog and I got this message, “Error establishing a database connection”, what do I do?

This error message means that the database information that you save into the wp-config.php file is incorrect. First, check to make sure that you typed in everything correctly then try again. If the error message persists, if maybe a problem with user permissions. Make sure that you granted access to the user your created for the database to the database.

If you’re confused on this, please re-read over the steps carefully under Step 1 here: https://www.undergroundtraininglab.com/2/seo-wordpress-installation/

If you’re still having troubles, contact your web host.

I tried to click on the button on the XML Sitemap page that says “Apply Jeff Johnson’s Configurations” and I do not see it. What is wrong?

This feature is available to the most recent version of our package, version 1.2a.

Version ‘a’ does not have this upgrade feature. Only versions 0.9b and 1.2a have this feature. If you are upgrading your blog make sure you have the most up-to-date package. Upload the entire contents of that package to the location of your current blog, overwriting all files. (Except for the wp-config.php file, of course)

You can distinguish the difference by looking at the name of the zip folder (notice the number letter version at the end of the name of the file):

Most up-to-date package file name:

I tried clicking on a link to a post on my newly installed blog and I’m getting a 404 error, page cannot be displayed. What is going on?

The error you are getting is due to a permalink structure error. This is a rather simple fix. In the instructions (https://www.undergroundtraininglab.com/2/seo-wordpress-installation/) Step 5 parts g., h., and i. explain what is needed to fix this problem. Read these steps carefully and it should correct your problem.

SimpleCaptcha plugin Issues

1.) Try to deactivate and reactivate the SimpleCaptcha plugin from Plugins>Installed from the admin side. If that still doesnt work, you may have to manually install the plugin. Connect to your blog via FTP, then go to wp-content/plugins and delete the current simple-captcha folder. Download the newest version of that plugin here: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/simple-captcha/ Extract the folder simplecaptcha and upload it the wp-content/plugins directory. If this is confusing, you can refer to WordPress’s installation of plugins here: http://codex.wordpress.org/Managing_Plugins After you’ve manually installed the simpleCaptcha plugin, it should now show within the Traffic Getting SEO Plugin as Installed & Activated.

2.) Make sure the .htaccess file is left writable otherwise this message will hang there because it knows it can not make changes to the permalink structure.

3.) Hopefully with the updates above you’ll be able to increase the utilization of the plugin.

I can’t download the free software.

After entering my login and password which worked fine, I clicked on the link on the next page to download the software, but it took
    me to this page:
and my browser page is just blank and isn’t loading anything at all and the
heading is ck.php (GIF image 1×1 pixels).

I’m using Firefox 3.0.10 and Windows XP

Do you have any idea of what the problem might be?

Jeff Johnson: Sorry, but we’ve tested it several times now with both browsers and it works.

Have you tried to righ-click and “save as” to your desk top?

If that doesn’t work try updating your browser to the newest version.

I have last year’s SEO Blog Software Professional Edition and need to know of if I should continue using it to set up new blogs AND also use the new plug-in that you recently released…

Or do I stop using the SEO Blog Software Professional Edition and just use the Traffic Getting SEO Plug-in?

I don’t want to stop using the SEO Blog Software Professional Edition if it’s more powerful and more SEO friendly than your free Traffic Getting SEO Plug-in.

Please advise because I’m confused and don’t want to mess up my web pages or lose traffic getting power.

Jeff Johnson: Same basic concept but the Plugin is much easier to upgrade when a new version comes out, or a new wordpress version comes out.

We stopped development of the seo blog software so at some point you won’t be able to upgrade your blog to the newest version of wp.. it just won’t work.

I’m having trouble installing your various plugins on my brand new wordpress.org site. i keep getting this message:
Incompatible archive PCLZIP_ERR_BAD_FORMAT (-10) : Invalid archive structure

    What to do?

Jeff Johnson: Hard to say. My guess is that is has to do with either your host’s php installation or file size restrictions. Could be a wp automatic upgrade issue, too.

I’d check with your host and see what they can do for you.

I tried to install this plugin and use it but this is what I get:

Site error: the file /hermes/bosweb/web124/b1245/sl.gisi/public_html/debtcreditfinance/wp-content/plugins/seo-blog/core.php requires the ionCube PHP Loader ioncube_loader_lin_4.4.so to be installed by the site administrator.

Any idea how I cold fix this?

    It’s covered in the instructions:

Thanks for the SEO Plugin. Installs ok – everything works as it should, but absolutely no impact on traffic. Something else I should be doing? (installed on both new and old blog)

Jeff Johnson: If it’s on a new blog, how do you know it doesn’t have an impact on traffic 🙂

The plugin uses proven technology and techniques to increase traffic. No doubt about it. But it still needs to be fed quality content, consistent amounts of content, and good keywords.

Just make sure your existing blog didn’t change the permilink structure when installed, and that your keywords and content are enough for your target market.

Thanks for deleting my post and not helping me with YOUR software.

    Nice way to show integrity!

Jeff Johnson says: I have no idea what you are talking about.

    Please try again.

    Hi Jeff,

Have you removed the link to download your latest plugin for WP 2.8? I could not access your page with the user name and password. Hope to hear from you soon.

Jeff Johnson: No, it’s still there. I have mailed out the new passwords 3 times in the last 2 weeks to the traffic getting seo plugin list. Please check your desktop for an email with the keywords “seo blog”.

    Hi, Jeff,
Thank you for this free Plugin, but in Terms of Use Agreement you write that I can have huge losses or do not make money at all. Is it what I need in my business?

Jeff Johnson: Yes, that means there is actually more to building a profitable business long term than just using a great piece of free software. You need good management, financial responsibility, solid marketing, a solid business plan, great ideas, good decision making, etc.
