removing links from your blog

May 8th, 2008 · 9 Comments

Updaete:

We removed the problem themes from the installation program so you shouldn’t be affected by this post.

But if you did install the Free SEO Blog Software before May 8th then please read this post.

 Hey guys,

I had no idea that thousands and thousands, and thousands of you would download and install my free blog software in the first few days alone… I didn’t expect that many in the first few months let alone the first few days.

I originally thought we’d have a few hundred people using it…  I guess I was wrong.

We’ve been working day and night just to keep up with demand for improvements, installation help, more blog tutorials, etc… and we’ve definitely delivered.

But there was a slight problem with the SEO Blog Software package that I had my guys put together for you.

Note: I caught the mistake before the guy even mentioned it, and our last two upgrades to the package did not include the “issue “discussed below.

Here’s what I’m talking about:

When I had them build the software for you I told them to “include a few links to my free content sites”… and they did. They even included a link to a site that is no longer available to the public.

Here’s a tip:

Giving away free templates and themes is a great way to build a huge network of incoming links to any site… great SEO… and great for the people that get to use your stuff for free… free… it’s a “win win” for everyone… and it’s one of the free traffic and viral links techniques we use and teach in our business every single day… and hopefully you will too.

But here’s the problem…

My guys duplicated the links in the theme footers and in the blogroll so there are twice as many links to my free content sites  as I had intended… and I was so busy helping you guys on the blog and getting tutorials together that I didn’t catch the error before I sent it out to you.

So although only 1 person (literally only 1 person) out of the 3097 people that have installed the SEO blog package in the first few days has even mentioned the free content links… I still feel bad about it.

There were only supposed to be “a couple” of them in the package.

I’m not mad at my guys… they did exactly what they thought they were told to do… I’m the one that missed it in the final inspection before release (I’m a little busy these days… and nights).

Like I said… my intent was to have a few links to my free content sites…. Not a bazillion of them.

So here’s the deal… feel free to remove any of my links that are on your blog, you won’t hurt my feelings.

And while you are at it… feel free to leave as many of my free content links on your blogs that you’d like to… you really won’t hurt my feelings then :)

All I ask is this:

We’ve been overwhelmed with your traffic and your requests… my guys and I have stayed up all night, every night, to update the tutorials, improve the installation routine, and answer your comments on the blog…

Please remember; we are giving this training, support, and software away for free… so I’d consider it a personal favor if you at least leave one or two of the links to my sites on your blogs… but the choice is yours… remove any and all of my links if you’d like to.

Like I said:

Only 1 person out of the first 3097 users of the free seo blog software has even mentioned it… but it was never my intent to have so many links on your new blogs.

So accept my apologies, feel free to remove my links… and get back to work building your blogs and your business!

P.S.

I’m only giving you permission to remove my links… my links are the ones found under “favorite links” in the sidebar and, if you have the older version of my package, the same ones may be found in the footer of the template.

The individual theme designers and wordpress themselves install links by default during installation… they aren’t mine and I didn’t put them there.
As with all wordpress blogs… check the theme code to see if they specifically prohibit the removal of their links… thousands of them do. If you have any questions about their links… please contact them directly… I can’t make that decision for them.

Remember, these designers give us free themes to use… and the way they get “paid” is by asking us to keep their links in the themes so they can get some free search engine love…  and free traffic and advertising for their site.

Like I said:

Giving away free templates and themes is a great way to build a huge network of incoming links to any site… great SEO… and great for the people that get to use their stuff for free… it’s a “win win” for everyone… and it’s one of the free traffic and viral links techniques we use and teach in our business every single day… and hopefully you will too.

What do you think about nofollowing the links in free wordpress themes? (Is it technically against the TOS? Is it morally wrong?

Jeff Johnson says: I’ve never seen a TOS that says you can’t add nofollow tags… I know I add them all the time.

Just check the commenting in the theme’s template and they’ll tell you what you may or may not do. Most just say “don’t remove the links”… but I’ve never seen “don’t nofollow the links.

    Hi Jeff,
I found you thru Ed Dale’s exuberant recommendation. I haven’t received a confirmation email so I can access the SEO software. And the RSS feed for this blog isn’t working with Google Reader. I also find it odd that you don’t provide a contact link anywhere. I hope you can address these things. Thanks,
    Liz

Jeff Johnson says: Sorry the spam filters ate your message!

    Here’s the optin confirmation page:
    http://www.undergroundtraininglab.com/optinthankyou.php

It will tell you what to look for in your spam filters and inbox

And there is a “need help” contact link on the optin confirmation page so if you need help just click the “Need Help? - Click Here!” link.

As for goole reader.. that’s strange. I just tried it and it worked but the blog title doesn’t show up. it also worked on google home page.

I’ll have my guys look at it just to be safe.

    Thanks for stopping by!

How do you use the yahoo pipes feed I type a keyword and gives me some listing but I cannot find the feed anywhere and what plugin do you use to automate your rss feed posting.

    Thanks
    Stee

Jeff Johson says: Ii believe we use syndicate for our rss plug in and we’ll see about getting the pipes tutorials up soon.

    Hey Jeff,

Are you or the person that created this blog selling this theme?

Jeff you deserve alot of credit for what your doing here and I have been working on creating the same type of blog and member site and I only wish that I can do it 1/2 as good as you do… Actually I have been working behind the scenes for months but doing it alone which is difficult but I love every minute of it.

You would think we were partners due to all the links and how many times I will be referring my members to come to you for more in depth look into many topics.

It should be complete this month and when I have my successful launch you will be receiving a phone call for a new Coaching Student.

P.S. This is not some form of spamming I didn’t even include my domain…

Well, considering that my somewhat meager traffic (it’s a Danish site after all) has almost doubled in the few days I’ve had the software I personally wouldn’t consider nofollowing them. I’m still looking through all the free stuff you’ve sent and I’m loving it. Sadly I couldn’t afford your course, maybe next time though.

One thing I’d like in the future would be more themes and more customization guides. However, with all the free content you’ve already sent me I really couldn’t ask for much more :-)

    Hey Jeff,

Loving the theme and seo blog software..
I was wondering how could I go about giving away a them package like you say to do above?

I know your busy and I am not looking for an in-depth, but could I add one of my links to your blog software and give it away?

Or do I just do what you did and use SEO themes and ad some plug-ins for SEO?

I would really appreciate some guidance here?

    Thank You for everything

Jeff Johnson says: Sorry, but you may NOT give my software away as yours.

And you may NOT modify it to give away.

The installation routines and customizations are my intellectual property and are protected by international law.

However, you can easily give away copies of wordpress itself since it is open source.

Add your own themes and such and you are in business.

But I’ll tell you right now… giving away free software is a huge support burden so make sure you have staff to help you handle it.
