One of the benefits of having a large staff is that they help me produce great content for my coaching clients… that makes my life much easier and it also makes it much nicer for my clients… my clients get help from my staff for free (well, not free if they are paying clients but then again… paying clients get a whole hell of a lot more of this kind of stuff as part of their deal).
One of “my guys”, Anthony Montalbano, has really learned how to tweak the hell out of the basic wordpress installation package.
I just tell him what I’d like wordpress to do from a “Get More Traffic/SEO” standpoint and he gets to work figuring it out and then makes it happen.
And then my other guys build sites with it, I test it, tweak it, and then tell Anthony what changes need to be made… and he gets to work on improving our SEO blog software for me… and my clients.
The really advanced version takes quite a bit more training and time to install (but is worth the extra effort)
So I had him put together a free (less complicated) version of my SEO Blog Software for readers of this blog and my mailing list.
I also had Anthony put together this step-by-step “how to install wordpress” tutorial and a short video for you.
Search Engine Optimization (SEO) Tweaks
- Optimized title tags.
- Title tags play a key role in SEO, they take a strong precedence in telling the search engines the main content on each article.
- Optimized meta-tags.
- Meta tags tell search engines what the site is about and also determine what content will appear in search results. Creating proper meta tags for search engines, makes your site search engine friendly
- Optimized URLs
- The keywords found in the URL of a page are recognized by search engines. By automatically place keywords in the URL of every blog post increases its recognition.
- Optimized XML Sitemap
- A sitemap helps search engines properly spider and index your site. This makes it easier for content, new and old to be found on your site. Each time your sitemap is update, it notifies the search engines such as Google, Yahoo, MSN, and Yahoo.
- Less Blog Posts per Page
- By having less blog posts per page creates more pages of content for your site. This is extremely effective from, not only a SEO standpoint, but as a monetization strategy as well.
Increase Blog Traffic Tweaks
- Extensive list of over 60 ping sites.
- This will notify over 60 different ping servers every time you post new content… This is the cornerstone of Jeff’s “blog and ping” SEO strategy and is an extremely powerful way to grab the search engine’s attention very quickly.
- Sociable Plugin
- The Sociable plugin puts convenient buttons on each post which allows your readers to share the content of your site with popular social new sites such as Digg, Facebook, and StumbleUpon. Just one article on Digg’s homepage can increase your traffic tenfold!
Security Tweaks
- Comment Moderation
- This will automatically require administrative approval of all comments posted to the blog. Protect your blog from comment spam.
- Akismet
- Akismet protects your blog from trackback and comment spam.
- Longer Administrator Password
- Creating a longer administrator password makes it exponentially more difficult for a hacker to crack your blog.
This SEO blog package includes 5 SEO optimized themes to choose from. These themes will make your blog look much better than the default Wordpress theme. This tutorial assumes you already have you’re domain and a web hosting account, and that your web hosting account uses cPanel web administration. You must have a web hosting account to set your blog up.If you don’t have one here’s a list of the ones I use and recommend:Web Hosting Reviews
Here’s what you need to do to install your SEO highly optimized blog package:
| To install this custom blog Wordpress package your web host needs a couple of things: |
1. Create a MySQL® database
a. Wordpress runs on a MySQL® database. If you already have a database setup, skip to Step 2. To setup a MySQL® database, first login to your site’s cPanel.

b. Locate the MySQL® Databases icon in the grid of icons and click on it.

c. To create a new database, type a desired name for the database in the field labeled New Database. The name should not contain any spaces or symbols in it. Click [Create Database]. (Save the database name for Step 2)

d. The database has been created. Click [Go Back].

e. Now that you’ve created a database, you have to add a user to access it. To add a user, locate the Create Users section and type in a desired username and password. Make sure to use a long cryptic password. Click [Create User]. (Save the username and password for Step 2)

f. The new database user has been created. Click [Go Back].

g. Now that you’ve created a database user, you have to link the database user to the database. To add the user to the database, refer to the section labeled Add Users To Your Database. Select the user you just created in the drop-down box labeled User. Select the database you just created in the drop-down box labeled Database. Click [Add User To Database] at the bottom of the section.

h. You’re done creating the database! You will use the database name, username, and password you just created in this step, in Step 2.
2. Download the SEO Optimized Wordpress Package.
a. To get a Free copy of the SEO Optimized Wordpress package go to http://www.undergroundtraininglab.com/main.php and signup to receive the free software.
b. Confirm your email address by clicking on the link in the email sent to you.
c. Read the instructions in the 2nd email on where to download the package.
d. After you have downloaded the package, extract it to your desktop. (If you do not have any extraction software, download and install WinRar here)

3. Setting up the Configuration
a. Open the wordpress folder you extracted from the download.
b. Locate and open the wp-config.php file in your preferred HTML editor. (If you do not have an HTML editor, you can open it in Notepad.)

c. Enter your MySQL database name, username, and password that you created in Step 1 in the appropriate fields. Save the wp-config.php file.
4. Uploading the Blog Package.
a. Open your FTP client and upload the entire contents of the wordpress folder to the location where you want your blog. (If you do not have a FTP client download and install Filezilla here)

5. Install Your Blog
a. Open your web browser and navigate to the location you uploaded your blog package. The installation screen will appear with a form similar to the one below.

b. Type in the title of your blog and enter your email address of the administrator of the blog. (Make sure the email address is correct, because your blog’s password will be emailed there.)
c. Click on the button [Click Here to Install SEO optimized…]
d. Save your blog’s Username and Password and click on [Log In]

e. Type your Username and Password that you got from your previous step in the login screen and click [Log In].

f. After logging in you should be brought to your blog’s Dashboard similar to the screen shot below:

g. Finally you need to verify that your permalink structure has been updated properly. To do this click on [Settings] in the top right corner, then click on [Permalinks]. Scroll down to the bottom of the screen, if you do NOT see the message below then the permalink structure has been updated properly.
| If your .htaccess file were writable, we could do this automatically, but it isn’t so these are the mod_rewrite rules you should have in your .htaccess file. Click in the field and press CTRL + a to select all. |
h. If you do get the message above you have to change the write access levels of the .htaccess file in the root directory of your blog. To do this, go back to your FTP client and right-click the .htaccess file and choose File Attributes. Type in “666” for the Numeric Value and click [OK].

i. Repeat step g. to verify that the error message has gone away.
j. Finally, click on [Visit Site] in the top left of your Wordpress Dashboard to see your newly installed blog!

k. Your new blog should look similar to the one below:

l. At this point you have successfully completed the installation of your new highly customized SEO Wordpress blog!

Okay Jeff,
Please do accept our appreciation for your fantastic software, and we are putting it to work this very evening. Sleep can take a hike for now.
In the meanwhile, a few questions:
1) we do need a domain name, yes?
2) we do need a host account, yes?
We are not “techies’ at all hence those somewhat silly questions. Just making sure that we are on the same page as the instructions video, which however made no mention of those points.
And it must be said that the installation video is easy to follow and therefore highly commended.
In a word, we are–hooked.
Very best regards Jeff,
this is marina & alice.
Jeff Johnson says: I’m glad you like it.
We’ve had fantastic luck generating free traffic with it.
And, yes, you’ll need a hosting account and a domain name.

What if you already have wordpress installed? can i just upload all the files over the olds ones to make it work? (except the config.)
Jeff Johnson says: Technically speaking you can, but you’ll have to know how to reconfigure everything since we’ve customized the crap out of this one to be search engine friendly.
So I’d suggest you simply use your SEO blog software package on a new domain, or in a new sub-directory of an existing domain; create a new blog installation.
I’ll see if this is something we’ll have time to cover during the live webinar.

The video shows a spot for a MySql name and password. Do I need to purchase a MySql account also? I’m not familiar with this.
Jeff Johnson says: Mysql is free with most linux hosting accounts. And you’ll need a hosting account with mysql to use the SEO blog software package.

Hi Jeff,
I have a blog but it was created with blogspot.com not word press. Is it possible to use this software that you offer with a blogspot.com? If not, is there a way to convert all my exsisting blog to word press? I have 3 years worth of info on my blog, but like that your software is seo friendly.
Jeff Johnson says: There is no “easy” way to migrate one blog platform to another (there are solutions but they all have issues).
My advice is to simply start a new blog using the Free SEO Blog Software .
As I tell my clients… everyone in every market needs more than one website and one blog to effectively compete in the search engines. I’m not talking about spam, I’m simply talking about maintaining individual niche blogs that serve your overall market; use unique content on each blog and link between them.

Thanks for the software. I’m used to installing WP via Fantastico on my Cpanel so I’m not familiar with setting up the MySql database first.
What does that involve?
Thanks in advance

Hey Jeff,
i just installed my SEO blog successfully,as soon as i get in it says “Hi, congratulations on your new SEO optimized blog”
From jeff johnson on your customized blog is successfully installed.
then below it says “Wordpress Development Blog” Wordpress2.5.1, a new version is available with a number of bug fixes.
I dont know how to update this also if i updated this version will it effect the original SEO optimized blog software which you gave me as this new version is just an updated normal blog? Please correct me if im wrong.
Should i install the “most popular plugins” like google sitemaps, wp2tumblr and photo droper?
if i should, how do i do this? do i just ftp to the existing folder where the seo blog is located?
Jeff Johnson says: wordpress issued that update this weekend and my guys have already updated our SEO wordpress installation package wth it.
However, that will only affect any new SEO blogs you install going forward; it is only for insalling new blogs… it doesn’t upgrade old ones.
You can update your existing one by hand but please remember to back it up before you update anything.
If something breaks, simply revert back to the old version and leave well enough alone.
Sorry, but there are thousands of wordpress plugins… we have no way of knowing how they will “interact” with our SEO blog installation.
I generaly ignore updating my old blogs as long as I can… as long as it “ain’t broke” I don’t bother fixing them.

Hi Jeff,
Thanks for the information on SEO. I tried to install the SEO for WP, followed the youTube installation video.
When I enter the url to my SEO blog, it comes up with your blog page. I enter my name then the url of my site, click on your wide button then get the following error message:
HTTP Error 404 - File or directory not found.
I tried it a few times, googled the error, no luck.
Any help would be appreciated.
Regards,
Lorne

This is seriously an absolute joke and a ridiculous waste of time and space. Thanks for wasting my downloading for nothing.
Jeff Johnson says: I really don’t know what to say to this except my customized version saves time on installing and updating several plug ins I’ve found useful, and it has 7 themes built into it that are much nicer than the standard versions.
And unlike most “plain jane” themes I allow people to remove my links.
We’ve even pre-configured the plug ins to save you even more time once you install it; you don’t have to go in by hand and make dozens of the necessary changes I normally recommend.
It saves most people at least an hour or two of their valuable time.
But if you are an experienced user that can hack your own blog installation routine, hack the themes, and hack the plug ins then I understand it isn’t as useful as it is to those people that just want a quick and easy way to install an upgraded version.
Not to mention the installation help we’ve been providing those that need it.
Plus most people will find value in the live webinar and video tutorials we are hosting to support the proper SEO use of the software.
Thanks again for giving it a try.

Hi Jeff,
Firtsly I want to say thanks, I just signed up for your free software.. Jeff I have a couple of questions here I hope you don’t mind answering..
1. Your blogs that use the software look great, my big question is where does the great content come from? that has to be one of the biggest problems to overcome.
2. What pays best the adsense or affiliate schemes.
Thanks Jeff.. Regards David
Jeff Johnson says: Thanks for the feedback!
The content comes from RSS feeds and data feeds.
My sites use my software
Affiliate Traffic Machine Pro
But there are free plug ins available that you could hack together to get it to work.
The best money for most people will come from selling adspace and/or links on their network of blog sites.
I’ve been offered hundreds of dollars to place links on blogs that are only a few weeks old.
But if that’s not an option adsense tends to be pretty much equal to the affiliate sales on most site.
Some markets like plasma tv and digital cameras tend to do better with other affiliate programs (vs adsense) due to the higher level of commissions paid once you make the sale.
But not always.
That’s why we always monitor the sites and see what programs are making us the most money.
IF one makes more than the other… we cancel the loser ads and run with the winning ads (affiliate program/adsense,e tc)
We use openx to rotate the adsense and affiliate banners on the sites. It’s free and works great.
12 Attila // May 2, 2008 at 10:02 am
Hi Jeff,
How do you promote these sites? Are they part of a bigger network of yours?
thanks,
Attila
Jeff Johnson says: Most of these types of sites are set up as “stand alone” sites. We don’t agressively cross link them together but we do drop an occassional link to the new sites in the same markets, but on different servers.
Our promotion is to build social media profile pages on sites like squidoo, hubpages,etc.. that funnel incoming links and traffic to them, social bookmarking, etc.
Our total promotion time is somewhere between 10 and 30 minutes.
Once we find one that is gaining traction we will go back and spend more time promoting it.
We also submit them to directories, but we use a dirt cheap service for that. The one I use is SEO directory submissions
You could also just search google for “seo directory submission” and look for a service to do it for you.
I also outsource “commenting’ on them (not my Jeff Johnson blogs, just these SEO blog software type sites that are designed to grab free traffic); the engines like to see comments so I pay people 5 cents to post keyword rich posts to my site.
And if I’m starting one as a membership site I’ll pay people to join and start posting pictures, videos, forum posts, etc. This really jumpstarts the traffic to new membership sites!

Hi Jeff
It’s nice to “re-connect” with you after first seeing you on my Traffic Secrets DVD’s and following you ever since. Since then I’ve always wanted you on my “team” of essential advisers as I build my Internet presence.
I’ve only recently had a website, blog and forum built for me and need to do a lot of work on them before I start promotion.
I just read an e-mail from you and clicked-through to your blog page and have now downloaded your SEO software. Now, I’m not strong on the technical stuff yet so it would be wonderful to be able to pay someone to install your blog software on my hosting site. Luckily, I’ve only done a few posts on my blog so wouldn’t have a large migration issue. So, do you know someone who I could pay to get me set-up or should I wait until May 15 for your new coaching club?
Jeff Johnson says: Sorry, but I don’t know anyone that does that type of work.
But I’ll see if my guys can put together a tutorial that shows you how to do it yourself.
I’m not promising anything… we are gearing up for the big day and my guys may not have the time until after we launch.
However, it does seem like something others could benefit from so we’ll see what we can do.
15 JJ // May 4, 2008 at 2:13 am
Hi Jeff,
How many blogs (using your blog software) can we put on one domain? For example, can I do this:
http://www.mydomain.com/blog1
http://www.mydomain.com/blog2
http://www.mydomain.com/blog3
http://www.mydomain.com/blog4
http://www.mydomain.com/blog5
… and so on?
If each of those blogs were to be pinged everyday from that one domain, would this cause the search engines to consider it as spam and deindex the entire domain and all of it’s blogs?
Or should I just put one blog on one domain?
Thank you for your wonderful software and for sharing your knowledge.
Jeff Johnson says: Glad you enjoy the info!
I normally keep the number of blogs on a site to 2 or less for many reasons.
The search engines don’t care how many blogs you have, all they care about is the content.
But if they ban one blog on your domain chances are they’ll ban the entire domain.
But the ping services will block your IP (domain) if they receive too many pings from it.
And if they block your IP address from pinging you lose a lot of the “blog and ping” search engine benefits.

Hey Jeff,
The first time i installed your SEO blog software it worked like magic, my website traininglab.cashdreamzs.com indexed almost immediately but when i logged in to my wordpress back office it said please upgrade to the new wordpress software, then i recieved an email from you saying that “Wordpress has upgraded heres your new SEO software” so i uninstalled the previous one and installed the new one with the link in the email you sent me and did it successfully, and with this new software i wrote a lot more than what was installed in the first SEO WP blog and 3days later my page is still not indexed by google. even when i search the Address it self no results show. Did i do some thing wrong? here is the address again traininglab.cashdreamzs.com
(edited by jeff)
Jeff Johnson says: First, You should always import the old database after installing the new free seo blog version in order to “keep” the settings and such.
Your site is in the google index, but there is only one post on the blog so you can’t expect to dominate the engines quite yet
It’s also very, very important that you find incoming links for your new pages. Be sure to follow the social bookmarking tutorial I posted for you.
Second, I see several problems from a search engine standpoint and installing it over the old one may have caused them.
1. Your root domain has nothing in it. The spiders will view your root as “under construction” and may not index the subdomain the blog is in.
Put up a index.html page that at least links to the blog subdomain.
2. your linking structure on the new blog is all wrong; the permalinks are screwed up.
Your post “best traffic generation” has a permalink of http://traininglab.cashdreamzs.com/1/blog-successfully-installed/ instead of being named after the post.
According to my guys… here’s how you can fix it.
” his URL to the post is such because he edited the first post that the installation posts. He would have to change the permalink tag (known as the post slug in Wordpress) as well, or delete that post and start a new one. The URL tag of each post is determined upon the initial posting of that entry. If he changes the content of the entry you would not want to change the URL. So yes, even though the content is different, the post slug is the same.”
3. You also left the genreic tag link “just another jeff johnson customized wordpress weblog” on the site.
THat should be a keyword rich title related to your site’s theme.
4. it looks like my guys duplicated the links to my sites by accident in the new installation package. Feel free to remove a few of them.
The new package wasn’t meant to be installed over the old one. I’ll be sure that is clear in the instructions going forward.
But in the meantime… only use the free seo blog software to build new blogs… do not update your old ones until we put together a tutorial on how update safely.
17 Jeff // May 5, 2008 at 6:47 pm
Hi Jeff.
Thank you so much for making all this material available to us to try for free. I’ve blown so much money over the years on products that didn’t do anything worthwhile (but sure sounded good in the sales letter!).
I’ve run into a problem in the installation and I’m hoping you can help me figure out how to fix it:
I installed all the files you made available for download, making only the alterations in the wp-config.php file as stated on the video tutorial. When I try to access the admin section, I get this message:
“Your PHP installation appears to be missing the MySQL extension which is required by WordPress”
Any idea what went wrong? I installed every file and I didn’t make any changes to any of them other than the config file.
Thanks.
Jeff
Jeff Johnson says: Glad you like the software!
As for your error… that is a hosting account specific error.
Your hosting provider needs to make some changes for you that are way beyond the scope of this blog.

Can I use fantastico to create a blog, then upload your package and have it overwritten and work?
Jeff Johnson says: really no need to use fantastico if you are going to upload mine other than it creating the database. And we cover that in the tutorials on this blog so why bother with fantastico… creating a database takes less than 2 minutes and then you won’t have to worry about upgrade issues.
19 Barry Friedman // May 6, 2008 at 2:47 am
I am getting an error after installation:
Error establishing a database connection
When I create My SQL Database it is adding my account name (getoutof) to my database, username, and password.
Example:
I create database ‘debt’ and it creates: getoutof_debt
I create username ‘treo’ and it creates: getoutof_treo
I create password ‘runner’ and it creates: getoutof_runner
I have modified the wp-config.php as instructed with the three fields with and without the added account name and I am getting the issue either way.
Any suggestions? Thanks.
Jeff Johnson says: it is quite common for a database name to be changed the way that you mention. Have you checked with your webhost for a solution? Each host is different and your error is too generic to give me clues as to what may be wrong.
20 Barry Friedman // May 7, 2008 at 1:05 am
Hi Jeff,
I see you are using this theme digg-3-columns-10″ which isn’t one of the templates we can choose from with this software you provided. Is there a reason you are using one as an example that isn’t included? Can we download and use that one and still get the SEO results you are claiming?
Also, I am googling digital camera reviews and even reviews on some of the models on your site and I don’t see your site on the first 5 pages.
What am I missing?
Thanks.
Barry
Jeff Johnson says: The digital camera reviews blog was built last fall for clients attending one of my seminars.
The theme used was just one my guys found and put up.
We created training tutorials based on that blog.
We showed how to set up your ad servering network, install the blog, the plug ins, etc.
The entire process was documented in a live video for my clients.
Installing the ad serving software, installing the blog, customizing and intalling the theme, finding the rss feeds and data feeds, creating the widgets, adding adsense, etc took an entire 35 minutes.
Before I went public with it the site was getting several thousand page views a day by 500 unique visitors a day.
And several others built for that same group ramped up to several thousand visitors a day in the first month.
They aren’t money sites by design.
I don’t capture email on it, but you should.
We built it because my client’s need a way to get some free traffic with as little work as possible.
If they want more traffic they were taught how to get it.
These types of sites are great feeder sites.
You put them up and you walk away.
You can sell banners in your network on them.
You can sell links on the sites themselves.
You can add links to your own money sites and treat them as your own mini-network of incoming links instead of paying hundreds of dollars a month to join one of those link networks that are so popular these days… the problem is that if you use a public network for your links… everyone knows where those sites are and when they leave the network they can turn it into google and the links are worthless.
Build your own and you are much better off.
And it only take a few minutes a day.
There are 1500 pages listed in google for the example site.
And it has consistently averaged 500 unique visitors a day before I released its domain to the publicl; now it get thousands.
We don’t actively promote it.
And we spent a total of 35 minutes building it (could have saved 10 minutes if we didn’t install a new ad serving network at the time).
If you wanted to make this a “money” site all you’d have to do is have your outsourcing agent subscibe to your rss feed.
And everytime a new post came in they’d be notified of it, and they could go to work promoting each and every post on the site to increase the individual rankings.
One thing to remember, though, is that you can’t choose the keywords or the content for the posts on these sites if you use rss feeds to build them on auto-pilot like we do.
you are stuck with the words given to you by the feeds.
If you want to dominate one particular phrase you should have complete control of all the content being added.
That way you control the title tags, the category names, the “tags”, the post titles, the content in the posts etc.
But that takes a ton of time and should only be done for your main money sites.
Use sites like this to make a few bucks, and build an incomoing links network for your money sites.
Or sell the sites you build like this… I’ve seen people build and flip wordpress sites for $250, $500 or more.
And they only take minutes to build and then you can just walk away and let it age in the engines.
Believe me, a site that is aged in the engines that is in a highly competitve market is worth thousands with or without traffic and/or sales.
Some of my clients and friends make thousands a month just building sites with free software like this and selling them, or selling links on them, or they get paid for SEO work and they use the free sites to increase the traffic to their client sites by providing high-quality incoming links to the client site. If the client stops paying, they simply remove the links and sell them to the next person.
Lots of way to make money with them.
I’m just trying to keep it as simple as possible and that’s what the free seo blog software is all about; it’s easy to install, has dozens of custom hacks in it, several proven plugins, installs very easily in a pre-configured way, and saves hours of time for those that aren’t wordpress experts.
And the tutorials to install them are quite popular.
I’ll be adding more seo training soon.
But hey, it’s free and the people who use it appreciate the work we are doing.
Hope this helps.

Hi Jeff,
I’ve followed everything in installing the software but I got this error message, “Error establishing a database connection.”
I’d appreciate your help.
Thanks,
Danny
Jeff Johnson says:
Here’s what my resident wordpress guru says:
“That’s an error from Wordpress saying that it cannot connect to the database information he provided. I would advise him to recheck his database information in the wp-config.php file
A couple reminders:
Did you grant access to the database for the username? (The username must have access to the database)
Did you make sure the database location is correct? (The database location has to be correct, typically ‘localhost’)
Is the database on the same server as the blog installation? (The database and blog must be hosted on the same server)
From there he would have to correct his database issues. This error is prior to the blog installation.

For connection problems I just delete the wp-config file. Then I connect and it builds a new one. Likely a tiny typo is the problem.
Also I set my post per page at 100. I find longer pages seem to rank better than short.

What if I already have all these seo-friendly plugins on my wordpress blogs, is it worth upgrading to yours or should I just stick with mine?
The whole list of plugins I use, are in my link.
Jeff says: I wouldn’t if you already have them properly set up and configured.
Just keep an eye out for the training materials and use them on your souped up blog and other sites.

If any of the people who are having the “Error establishing a database connection” problem are on Dreamhost, it may be that they haven’t specified the mysql database location correctly - on most hosts that would be ‘localhost’ but on Dreamhost it is ‘mysql.yourdomain.com’

Hi Jeff,
Thank you for the software. Quick question: How do I make a bank new blog look like it’s been around for a while? In other words, add “past content”…is there such a thing? Also, is there a way to add entries from other blogs?
For example, say I create a blog about Mobile Technology and I find a great blog entry on another blog (i.e. engadget.com) about a new laptop. Is there a way to enter that story in my blog manually or automatically? Thanks Jeff, looking forward to your training. -Marv

Thanks for the software. One question before I get started. I know you wrote that you do not update older blogs, but I would like to update two blogs I have in Semiologic Pro. Is this software similar to that? I haven’t updated my blogs since last fall. Upgrading in Semiologic entails paying $250 US every year… (didn’t think of this when I bought it).
Also, are we allowed to install the software on more than one domain?

I put all of the WP files in a folder on my domain called /moneyblog. Now to log into the blog they have to type the full path of the domain

How can I make it so all the user has to do is type http://spikeyoursales.info and they are at the blog. Once I figure that out, then I’ll install the seo software.

I don’t know if this comment got through last time, but I seem to be experiencing an issue with the SEO Blog Software that no one else has listed here.
I got the software installed ok, even managed to edit the CSS and customize one of the templates. However, the permalinks don’t seem to be working correctly. The only setting the permalinks will work on is the default wordpress setting. If I try to change the setting, I get a message that says I need to update the .htaccess file. If I change the setting to anything other than the default wordpress setting, I get a 404 Not Found error. I imagine this is no good for SEO…if the permalinks can’t work, then how will the RSS be able to work?
That file seems unwritable (I cannot edit PHP with anything I have), so how do I go about updating that? Or is there an easier way to set the permalinks up so that the titles of my posts can be included in the permalink (for SEO purposes)? Help would be greatly appreciated!
-Ina

Hi Jeff and team,
Great package you guys have put together! And perhaps just in time.
I have been having problems with my Word Press install. I paid someone online to build a site for me. I did this before I knew much about conducting such a task. Since then, I have discovered how easy it can be to build a web page. But, there are still some challenges…
I am not sure what has happened, but my current word press install at http://www.hillbillydirect.com was never completed by the fella I paid to do it. I quickly started to learn Word Press and started trying to edit/finish it. I installed some additional plugins and tried a few themes (all from Word Press site). My comments were working for the first while, but I have noticed in the last week that it no longer is and the previous comments aren’t there either. Working with WP Support didn’t get me far. I was told to reinstall Word Press.
So this is where your package comes in. I would like to maintain my content, I know there isn’t a lot yet, but it has taken time to develop and I would like to save it. I guess the typical way to do this would be to back up the database. But I am not sure if that will work in this instance because the database says that WP_comments has crashed and is unrepairable. So backing up would probably save that error?
What is the best way to start fresh with a new install, using your word press package when I have an old/existing install on my domain?
What is the best way to save my data if my database is potentially damaged?
WP support said to just copy the text.
I use netfirms.ca as a host. I have been told they are not very good, but besides this problem, I have been happy with them. I have 6 months remaining on my term and no funds to purchase a different hosting package at this time. But is Netfirms.ca a good host?
Jeff and team, I would very much value your time and comment/assistance with switching/reinstalling WP using your free Word Press Theme Package.
Regards,
Jeromy

Thanks in advance for any help and many thanks again for this package.
Anthony Montalbano says:
Your Wordpress API Key is found within your Wordpress.com account. Here is a tutorial from Wordpress that shows you where and how to get your Wordpress API Key: http://faq.wordpress.com/2005/10/19/api-key/
As for the plugin upgrades, yes, you can upgrade your blog plugins without obstructing the current configurations of your blog. This can be done using Wordpress “update automatically” feature or by manually downloading and reuploading each plugin to the wp-content/plugins directory of your blog.

Jeff, I have installed the blog at http://www.ibrokersystem.com/index.php but my admin password is not working and the reset of password is also not working. Is there any way I can fix it some files in CPANEL? or how do I fix it? Thanks.
Anthony Montalbano says:
Check to make sure that you grabbed all 15 characters of your password. The password generated uses symbols as well as letters and numbers. Make sure you have only 15 characters from the generated password, without any spaces before or after. If you entered a valid email on installation of the blog you should have the password emailed to you. If you may have lost that password and your email was not valid, you will have to re-install the blog software.

Jeff,
I’m a total idiot about web sites. I have a Yahoo Small Merchant website which I had built for me. Can this blog be used with a Yahoo Site? Where does it pop up? Do I need to create a separate page for it? I’d love to take advantage of it as I need to some how, some day (soon) appear on the search engines. My site is 45 days old and I only come up with you type in my url :^(
Jeff Johnson says: Sorry, but I don’t know if yahoo merchant stores allow for installation of the software.
But even if they don’t you would simply install it on another hosting account and use it to jumpstart the traffic and increase the rankings of your yahoo store.
I believe I discuss that in the viral video tutorial (you don’t need video to use the techniques)

I keep getting website cannot display. This is not a very user-friendly theme to say the least.
Anthony Montalbano says:
This is not a theme, this is a customized installation of the Wordpress blog. This is the complete blog package, not just a theme.

I do not see my blog posts anywhere, pinging is not working I guess. Because not one single post have appeared anywhere. I have followed the installation exactly and no pings have been sent.
Jeff says: Believe, the software works…. I have used it every day for the past 4 or so years to grab free search engine traffic.
Make sure your site isn’t “banned” from engines.
Or make sure your server isn’t sending out false headers such as 301s or false 404s.
And make sure you didn’t accidently set the blog to “private”… that would tell the serach engines not to index your site.
And check your .htaccess file and your theme template and make sure someone hasn’t inserted no index directives in them.
64 Matt // May 29, 2008 at 7:56 am
Anthony and/or Jeff,
If I installed the SEO Blog about 2 weeks or so ago (today is 5/29 btw), should I be using the “new” updated SEO Blog download links that were provided in the “a little bad news and a ton of good news” email dated 5/25 from you guys??
Unsure how to go about re-installing every time an update comes out and whether a completely new install is necessary?
Was this an update or just another email stating that the SEO Blog software is still available?
Isn’t there an easier way to implement any new features that you guys might come out with besides a completely new install? Confused fo sho. Let me know, please and thanks a ton.
Jeff Johnson says: This particular update involves much more than just adding a plug-in; it completely streamlined the installation process plus it streamlines the post-installation tweaks even more.
That means you really can’t just add add a plug in to replace it.
However, you can add anything you’d like to your existing installation so rather than replace the old ones simply add plug ins that you find on the web.
Just be sure to always use the newest version when building new blogs.
And here’s the video tutorial on upgrading your blog

Hello,
A long tortuous success story…
I tried to install the blog with an earlier version, 0.9 (located at blog-01.jimmycraigaffiliatepage.com) and now with 1.2a (located at blog.jimmycraigaffiliatepage.com). I get the same error message with both after uploading before I get the initial wordpress screen:
“Error message HTTP 500 - Internal Server Error. Possible reasons:
- the website is undergoing maintenance
- the website has a programming error”
I tried the directory index fix from the FAQ but that didn’t change anything.
I can see with the FTP that the files are there in the root directory where they should be (except the .htaccess file which the FTP doesn’t read - but it’s there also, I can see it in the Fantastico-equivalent program). I know the “connection” with the Internet works, because I had a place-holder there before, and I took it out before I uploaded the blog files.
I have a different version wordpress blog installed (but not really functional yet) on the system, but it is on a different domain and uses a different SQL data base (located at blog.good2004.biz - a nice template!). That tells me (1) it should work, and (2) there shouldn’t be any conflict between the two.
My host’s Linux control panel is similar to the C Panel, but not identical. I can change permissions (tried this with the .htaccess file - didn’t help) but that doesn’t seem to be the problem here.
My pc operating system is in German, but I don’t think that should be a problem (the host system is in US-English).
I tried uploading the files a second time (takes more than 30 minutes with my low-speed ADSL) but with no improvement. Is it worth while to install the same blog as the (successful) one on the other site and then try to modify it? I’ll sleep on it…
Next day…
In the wp_config.php I changed the secret phrase from the standard one and changed the database prefix from wp_ to aa_ -> got different response “no connection to database” (note: used “wp_” for the blog that’s already installed - there is one “master” sql database for my complete account!)
Gave dba priviliges to the database user -> no change (were already as dba except for name)
Changed dbhost name from “local host” to the specific name/address => THAT did the trick!
Wow! Finally!!

Hi Jeff,
How do you get rid of that banner that says
More Traffic
More Leads
More Money
in the sidebar?
Thank you

Whoops. Did it again. The problem is that the “submit comment” button comes before the security code space.
In case that means my message gets wiped without being read, here we go again….
Thanks Jeff for your praiseworthy generosity in giving the seoblog package and training free.
My accompanying question is one I hope you’ll humour me concerning…. Does the numeric value for the file attributes in the .htaccess file HAVE to be 666? I have an aversion to that number. It doesn’t seem to have bothered anyone else who’s left a comment here, but it bothers me.

Jeff Johnson says: I’m sorry but it sounds like you need the entire training course that is in the paid membership site. However, the site is currently closed to new members.
I’ll be sure to email everyone when some seats open back up.
