While I know what you are saying Jeff, I wish this was not the forum through which you had broadcast this video. It will certainly be misconstrued.
Filsaime is moving into a different realm and all the best to him. His giving stuff away always has a hook to it and it does.
People who don’t understand the software industry should stay away from this method. They will get themselves into far more headaches than it’s worth.
It’s a bonus offer for his product… I clearly state that in my video because I dont’ hide the fact that I’m an affiliate marketer… it is what I do and what I teach.
I have 72 other videos on yotuube that aren’t selling a product… but I have to make a living somewhere along the line as well
But don’t fault Mike… he’s giving away the software but he’s using the “service” model to monetize it… which is the same as wordpress, linux, mysql, etc.
A major source of revenue for the entire open source system is give away the software, charge for support.
And we have membership sites where we teach people to use open source software… and they pay us.
We dont’ code the software in mulitple markets, we just teach them how to use it more effectively.
I’ll be covering that in the webinar.
But thanks for the feedback.
You are the first to do this via a video. The rest just spam you mailbox and keep telling you how you can make money with this software without telling you how.
The how is in the membership site that “He” is selling by giving away his software. I do have his software from his last “offer” but I still don’t think it is easy to make money giving away this software without getting the “rights” from him.

The rights from him are free, so you can get the software without buying it or joining his developer’s community.

This is an example of the “freemium” business model – that is, give something away, and upsell/cross-sell on the backend and/or use it to build a list (and incidentally, to build inbound links
).
Mike’s release of BM highlighted a few things for me. First, make sure your licenses are nailed down. He has the GPL on the site, but also has additional conditions (which are likely invalid against the GPL, so he should probably have used the LGPL. Then again, “I’m not a lawyer” so this is just an unqualified opinion).
Second, the big opportunity is integration. Look for where existing open source software could do with being integrated with other OS software. We’re planning something down that line ourselves.
Third, most OS companies sell services around the OS software they provide (including training), and this has proven to be a solid model, but there is no reason not to have a premium version with proprietary code mixed in (as long as it is permitted by the license covering the source OS software).

Well, I distinctly got the impression you’re trying to sell it. The source code may be free but the upsell for the community is 200 dollar. So why do you say it is NOT about Mike’s program? Sorry to say I didn’t like the way you presented this 8 minute ‘webinar’.

I have freeware on my site that I just give away. But I haven’t had much financial success. How can I make money off my free software?
This easy way is to require a them to join your list before you give the software away. And then sell them something once they are on your list.
There are other ways that I’ll cover on the webinar.
