Hey Jeff,
Great tutorial to make me take care while dealing with Aweber, I can’t wait to see How you did 100K+ with affiliate marketing, as I had my share of success but not that far for sure
Best Regards,

Tom // Feb 5, 2010 at 7:42 pm
Thanks for the great tips.
Doesn’t Aweber only register an email open if the 1×1 pixel in the email is shown, which by default won’t show or track the open in accounts like Gmail.
So are you not risking deleting good subscribers who may have just not had their opens tracked correctly?
Look forward to your reply
Tom
Jeff Johnson // Feb 5, 2010 at 7:48 pm
That’s why I have them click a link in the email.. to make sure we register an open via the click. And that’s also why I sent out an email with a subject line to grab their attention “being removed from list”… to get them to open it and click. I haven’t ever just removed a nopen from my list without giving them multiple chance to respond in some way.
the lesson I learned is tha I need to make sure I state quite clearly… “this message may be a mistake and I apologize if you are seeing it in error… but your emails aren’t tracking so please click this link to be safe..” That’s not the exact copy I’d use, but you get the idea.
Tom // Feb 5, 2010 at 7:52 pm
Ok thanks Jeff.
Really appreciate you taking the time to record the video and for answering my questions instantly.
Have a great weekend

Yeah I opened it for a sense of fear of lost. So it might now be as accurate for other emails. Since I thought you just wanted get rid of my email.
Paul // Feb 5, 2010 at 7:57 pm
Jeff, good stuff! Out of all the people I use as models, I like your style the best.
Kitty Jellinek // Feb 5, 2010 at 8:00 pm
Hi Jeff,
No need to apologize these things happen.
I am just amazed that an experienced marketer like yourself would pay for an autoresponder service.
Why wouldn’t you set up your own autoresponder script on your own hosting platform with 3 great advantages ?
1] Better delivery rate.
2] Full control.
3] No fees.
I give all my members their own scripts to use.
Just curious why you would advocate paying monthly fees for such a service to your members?
Cheers,
Kitty.
Jeff Johnson // Feb 5, 2010 at 8:07 pm
Thanks for your support! As for the self-hosted email service… trust me, my friends and I have tried hosting our own, paying for hosting on the MAJOR services, etc. And everytime we’ve all agree that self-hosting is a bad idea when you are mailing hundreds of thousands, even millions, of emails a month… you need a full time staff to maintain your whitelisting in order to keep up deliverability. It’s cheaper to hire a good firm like aweber to do that for you.
stanley // Feb 5, 2010 at 8:09 pm
Dude, I have the feeeling that you are a stunt master with that your error. I believe you were on research possibly to find out the percentage of trust your subscribers may have on you irrespective of whether they have bought-in to your program or not.
However, if it were a genuine mistake then I am quite sure it led you to more discovery about your subscribers.
Tell us the number subscibers that clicked your link to stop you from either deleting or suspending their email
Jeff Johnson // Feb 5, 2010 at 8:30 pm
It was a genuine mistake on my part. The response numbers don’t matter since they went out to my loyal readers, and I sent out an apology within the hour telling them they didn’t need to click. I’ll test it again soon to the RIGHT list segment.
Bob Marconi // Feb 5, 2010 at 9:00 pm
Thanks for info!
Why doesn’t Aweber provide this for you? I think it’s wrong to be charging folks for some thing not being used.
Jeff Johnson // Feb 6, 2010 at 11:24 am
It’s actually a good idea to keep a record of unsubsribes, they just happen to charge you. No big deal, just use the trick I show you in the video.
David Jenyns // Feb 5, 2010 at 10:37 pm
Thanks for the video Jeff.
I’ve never really 100% understood how Aweber can track open rates if you’re sending text emails (as opposed to html ones). As mentioned Aweber inserts a 1×1 pixel but surely that would only apply to html emails… I wonder how they’re doing it for text emails.
Anyway insight is always appreciated.
Cheers

Another good stuff from you Jeff. The “remove from list” email is a good attention grabber. It made me check your email and click your link. Of course, I don’t want to miss important updates from you.
HP // Feb 6, 2010 at 12:33 am
Hi Jeff,
Thanks for your great tutorial on “how to correct a mistake” by adding true value to anyone who reads your message. Now, we know how to clear a list, something we might not know if you didn’t show us. That’s cool.
As a former member of your Underground Training Lab and an active subscriber to your list – who just bought a product you recommended through your affiliate link – I was really upset about receiving that irritating Email message from you… you guess…
But you realized so quickly what went wrong and responded so appropriate that this experience will certainly contribute to strengthening your reputation of being a master marketer. You demonstrated a good sense of what is good customer care.
We all go through similar experiences at times in our private life or in our business. A mistake happened, we are responsible, what now? You gave us a good lesson on how this can be corrected. You did it well, Jeff!
Jeff Johnson // Feb 6, 2010 at 9:27 pm
Thanks!
Barry // Feb 6, 2010 at 12:42 am
Hmmmm….gotta tell ya, I got this “being removed from my list” email and it had the exact opposite effect on me. I promptly open the email and went straight to the bottom and unsubscribed to save the sender the effort. Seemed more like a threat so I wished him bonvoyage…hehe….not the response you might have expected but true nonetheless.

Jeff Johnson // Feb 6, 2010 at 12:51 pm
Cool, you either want to be on my list or you don’t. Your choice.
Rob // Feb 6, 2010 at 2:12 am
Hey jeff
I wondered what was happening.
I cant wait to have this as a problem.
I have to figure that a screwed up list beats no list any day
Thx Rob
Magic Man // Feb 6, 2010 at 2:39 am
Hey Jeff,
Thank you so much for the unsubscribed tip. Man I had over 400 people that had stopped receiving my emails.
I’m going to try the reactivation technique here shortly.
Thanks again,
Corey

Howdy Jeff
It looks like your doing the twitter thing for your emails, meaning shorter and to the point.
There are cheaper services then Aweber, do you use then out of habit or are they the best value for the money?
Thanks, Tony
Jeff Johnson // Feb 6, 2010 at 11:21 am
best value for the money.
Larry // Feb 12, 2010 at 10:35 pm
That’s good to know. I was disappointed in GetResponse and am thinking of getting A Weber. Think I will.
Ashley // Feb 6, 2010 at 10:49 am
Great video Jeff, learned a lot for cutting down Aweber costs and at the same time improving my open & click through rates!

Hi Jeff,
Thanks for the awesome info. Question, have you ever tried icontact? Do you know if they offer the same or one has an advantage over the other?
I’m new at this and growing my list but I wanted to know if there is any advantage to using one or the other. Thanks.
Jeff Johnson // Feb 6, 2010 at 2:33 pm
No, I’ve never used icontact so I really can’t say.
Marian // Feb 6, 2010 at 3:26 pm
I’ve already started cleaning my lists.. and I got even more tips from your tutorial. Thanks.

margaret // Feb 6, 2010 at 9:35 pm
Can you confirm – you cannot do a split test on a segment? Split tests can only be done on an entire database? If so, doesn’t that rather dampen the power of split testing – find out on a small segment what works, then use the better of the options on the whole?
maybe I’ve misunderstood something – would appreciate the clarification
Jeff Johnson // Feb 6, 2010 at 10:15 pm
They don’t give you the option of choosing a saved segment or choosing a multiple list option inside a split test message like they do within a normal broadcast.
Colin // Feb 6, 2010 at 10:11 pm
Thanks Jeff I’m new to this but have relied on tutorials like yours, Frank Kern, Mike Koenigs and membership with Dan Kennedy (GKIC Diamond) to get me up to speed as fast as possible.
I always listen then test. Why are people always asking if you know how to re-invent a cheaper wheel?
Jackie // Feb 7, 2010 at 2:29 pm
Thanks for the tutorial — I hadn’t even thought about Aweber charging for people who had unsubscribed.
Herman // Feb 9, 2010 at 6:31 pm
Hey Jeff. thanks for the wakeup call. I’m thinking about switching from constant contact to aweber and employing your techniques to wake up my list and track them better. Any advice about making the switch or comparison of the two providers?
Jeff Johnson // Feb 9, 2010 at 8:15 pm
I hear good things about constant contact but have never used them. The issue with transferring contacts over to aweber is that you can only import 10k at a time, and they will all have to double optin to confirm the transfer… which means you’ll lose a ton of leads.
Shaqir Hussyin // Feb 11, 2010 at 1:59 pm
Thanks Jeff,
can’t wait to see the whole lot and by the way when will you be opening your coaching club again?
I emailed your staff… No reply

It’s been closed to new students since last November so I should probably get around to opening it up again within the next few weeks or so.

Hi Jeff,
Is gryphius a good tool to use to get your landing page at the top in SE’s?

Correction on the last messge: glyphius**
Jeff Johnson // Feb 12, 2010 at 11:40 am
sorry, but I’ve never used it so I really can’t say.

Hi Jeff
Great content (as always).
Might it be that some recipients of emails are reading them in ‘preview mode’, then deleting them without ever opening?
I guess that, providing you only send a ‘last chance’ message to those who have not clicked on any links in your emails for several months, it does not matter if you end up removing those folk from your list (as they are browsers rather than action takers).
Best Wishes from the UK.
Mat
Jeff Johnson // Feb 17, 2010 at 2:28 pm
Absolutely, I prefer to have buyers on my list so I at least expect to see a click on a link every few months.
